Every year on May 1st, we mark International Labour Day. Also referred to as May Day, its objective is to honor and commemorate the labor force and the struggles of the working class. The origins of Labour Day can be found in the labor movement of the late nineteenth century, when workers fought for better working conditions, including an eight-hour workday and equitable pay.

History

The American labor movement, which demanded only eight hours of work a day during a massive demonstration in 1886, served as the inspiration for this day. Nevertheless, events in Chicago worsened, causing injuries to a few, and culminating in 'The Haymarket Affair.' The occasion marked the beginning of International Labor Day.
The idea behind International Labour Day, also known as Workers Day, originated in 1889 when a number of socialist groups in Europe decided to set aside May 1st as a special day for workers.

Significance

With their arduous labor, workers have significantly contributed to the development of their country. In addition to honoring laborers' dedication, Labour Day aims to inform them of their legal rights and shield them from exploitation. It is also meant to serve as motivation for projects that enhance working conditions and help employees advance.
